ST. LOUIS -- The Pirates called up right-hander Casey Sadler from Class AAA Indianapolis today to bolster a bullpen that had to cover seven innings Saturday afternoon.
To make room for Sadler, the Pirates optioned right-hander Jared Hughes to Indianapolis.
Sadler, 23, was added to the 40-man roster after the end of the 2013 season. His first appearance with the Pirates will be his major-league debut. Sadler had a 1.67 ERA in four starts for Indianapolis, striking out 16 in 27 innings.
The Pirates' bullpen covered seven innings Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals after starter Francisco Liriano exited in the third inning when a nosebleed made him dizzy.
