News of the day
Clint Hurdle said after the game that Bryan Morris would make the opening day roster. He declined to give the repercussions of that decision for the rest of the bullpen.
Morris said he had heard indirectly that he would make the team, but had not been told definitively. "I was expecting to be here. I worked my butt off this offseason to come in and take one of those spots."
Morris, who turned 27 Friday, finished with six consecutive scoreless outings encompassing eight innings as he became more comfortable with his new two-seam fastball.
"Spring's been good for him," Hurdle said. "He's thrown pitches that are hard to hit and sometimes hard to catch. We'll see how it plays out. His confidence is in a good place, though."
Morris, a first-round draft pick in 2006, said he wasn't quite sure how he would feel when he took the field on opening day. "I've had plenty of minor league opening days and I don't think it's going to be quite the same," he said.
