Hitter: Jordy Mercer, who went 1 for 2 and extended his hitting streak to four games.

Of note: The two runs scored in the eighth inning on an error by Joe Mauer.

News of the day

Cumpton has allowed one earned run in his past three outings, spanning 132⁄3 innings. He allowed a double and a walk in the second but struck out two in a perfect third. He hit Oswaldo Arcia in the fourth. Aaron Hicks singled in the fifth, but Cumpton then forced an inning-ending double play. Jason Grilli pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one, and Jeanmar Gomez threw two scoreless innings. Travis Snider went 1 for 3 and is hitting .364.

Justin Wilson pitched a scoreless inning against the New York Yankees’ Class AA team at Pirate City, allowing one hit and striking out two.
