News of the day

Gerrit Cole pitched three innings Wednesday in his second official start of spring training.

He gave up three hits, and no earned runs while predominantly throwing his fastball, and sprinkling in his slider and curveball.

"That was a big step forward from the last outing. There were some good parts about it, but there are still some things that need to be cleaned up," he said. "[Threw] a lot of fastballs early. It's important to throw a lot of fastballs and keep building arm strength. Got a little bit creative there in the third, but for the most part was taking care of business and delivery as you can."

Cole had hoped to go four innings, but a 25-pitch first inning and two-out walk to Joe Mauer in the third ended his outing after three.

"The two-out walk to Joe Mauer [stunk]. I had an opportunity to get out there in the fourth. Who knows if I would've finished it, but I would've had the opportunity in the fourth instead of having to go finish it in the pen," Cole said. "It was disappointing. I wasn't able to jump ahead of Mauer especially when he's up there taking."

Manager Clint Hurdle said it was a step forward.

"He did have a good live fastball. Probably would've liked to have been a little more efficient ... [but was] another step in him getting ready for the season," Hurdle said.

Injury update

Phil Irwin (elbow) is slated to pitch an inning today. ... Hurdle had no update on Jeff Locke (right side).
