News of the day
Liriano threw mostly two-seam fastballs, mixing in two sliders and a changeup. He did not throw his four-seam fastball.
“I prefer to start with the fastball and get good command of the fastball, just throw it until I feel comfortable with it,” he said.
Liriano said he prefers to find and perfect the release point of his fastball before beginning to throw his slider more often.
“I use my slider a lot, so I need to get fastball command better, too, in order to pitch in the games, to not throw just one pitch, and mix it up,” he said. “I need to get my release point with the fastball and then, you know, work my way up to the breaking ball.”
Liriano said he expects to pitch two innings in his next outing. The date of that outing has not been announced, but regular rest would put Liriano’s next start Monday against the Boston Red Sox.
Manager Clint Hurdle said Travis Ishikawa, who was removed from the intrasquad scrimmage due to tightness in his right leg, likely would need a couple of days of rest. Hurdle said he did not know which part of Ishikawa’s leg was tight.
