The Pirates signed catcher Omir Santos on Friday to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to major league spring training.
Santos, 32, hit .248 with three home runs in 61 games with Class AAA Columbus in the Cleveland Indians organization last season.
Santos has a career .248 average in 122 major league games with the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Detroit Tigers and Indians. The New York Yankees selected him in the 21st round of the 2001 draft.
Teams often bring several catchers to spring training to ease the load of catching daily bullpen sessions. The Pirates have invited 17 players to spring training.
