NEW YORK -- The Pirates activated left-hander Francisco Liriano from the 15-day disabled list this morning and optioned reliever Duke Welker to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Liriano started the season on the disabled list as he recovered from a broken right humerus sustained, he said, when he slammed his hand into a door to scare his kids on Christmas Day. He will start today's game against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

The Pirates agreed to terms with Liriano before the holidays but he suffered the injury before taking a physical. The contract was put on hold, but he and the Pirates agreed to new terms, with language that ties his 2014 vesting option to how much time he spent on the DL in 2013 as a result of his broken right arm.

Liriano make $1 million in base salary this season.
