The Pirates will not know until today how much time, if any, catcher Ryan Doumit will have to miss to a right wrist injury.

Doumit had an X-ray and MRI on the wrist yesterday, but Dr. Mark Baratz, the team's hand specialist at Allegheny General Hospital, decided that neither provided conclusive evidence of what is causing Doumit pain, so he ordered a CT scan for today.

"Dr. Baratz needed more information, and that's what he hopes this scan will bring," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said last night after the 8-0 shutout of the Florida Marlins at PNC Park. "Right now, we really don't have any other update."

Huntington did not specify the type of injury the Pirates' medical staff is seeking to diagnosis, but it is believed to be related to the ligaments on the wrist. X-rays did not detect a fracture.

Doumit first felt the pain with a swing in his second at-bat against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday afternoon, when he grounded out to second base. He remained in the game for four more innings before being replaced by Jason Jaramillo, one of four regulars pulled from what would be an 11-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The Pirates' staff was not made aware of any issue with Doumit until he reported to PNC Park yesterday afternoon complaining of soreness that came overnight. Doumit described the injury to manager John Russell to as feeling "more like a pull than a pop," Russell said.

Doumit has no injury history with that wrist. He badly bruised his left wrist in 2007.

Doumit, the Pirates' cleanup hitter, was batting .244 with two home runs, four doubles and nine RBIs. He was replaced last night by Jaramillo.

The Pirates will need another catcher if Doumit is not available -- that surely would be Robinzon Diaz getting promoted from Class AAA Indianapolis -- but Huntington said last night that no roster move will be made until there is more information about Doumit.

"We're hoping for the best," Russell said.
