The Penguins have made it official that rookie defenseman Olli Maatta will remain with the club.
Maatta, 19, has a goal and two assists in nine games and has earned high praise for his play. By remaining on the roster for the team's 10th game -- Friday against the New York Islanders at Consol Energy Center -- Maatta's entry-level contract will take effect for this season.
If he remains beyond the 40-game mark, he will be eligible to reach free agency at age 25.
The Penguins had just two choices for Maatta. If he had not remained on the NHL roster, he would have had to be sent back to his junior team, the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Maatta can still be returned to London at any time if the Penguins choose.
