UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The Penguins have recalled center Trevor Smith from their farm team in Wilkes-Barre.

He is expected to join them in time for their game against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum this evening, although it is unclear if he will be in the lineup.

Coach Dan Bylsma said this afternoon that center Evgeni Malkin will sit out his seventh game in a row with what is believed to be a shoulder injury, but the Penguins have 12 other forwards on their major-league roster.

Smith, 28, has 18 goals and 23 assists in 64 games with the Baby Penguins this season.

He has appeared in 23 NHL games with Tampa Bay and the Islanders.
