Penguins fans waited for hours in long lines that curled around Consol Energy Center, then packed the arena tonight and welcomed back the hockey club with loud and frequent applause.

The Penguins don't open the lockout-shortened season until Saturday, but they held a Black and Gold scrimmage that featured free admission with open seating.

Matt Cooke scored twice for the team designated White, but Evgeni Malkin's third-period, five-on-three goal gave the team designated Black a 4-3 advantage through regulation.

It was predetermined that there would be overtime and a shootout regardless of the score.

Brandon Sutter tied it, 4-4, with an overtime goal, but Tyler Kennedy, Jayson Megna and Brandon Sutter scored for Black in the shootout for a 5-4 win.

The Penguins open the season Saturday afternoon at Philadelphia.
