The Penguins have gotten to the NHL's regular-season roster limit of 23, but not in a way many anticipated.
Left winger Eric Tangradi, who has been working on the No. 2 line, has been assigned to Wheeling of the ECHL, and the Penguins have recalled goalie Patrick Killeen from the Nailers.
Whether those two players will remain with those clubs when the Penguins open the regular season Thursday night against Philadelphia wasn't immediately known.
Earlier in the day, the Penguins returned defenseman Simon Despres to his junior team, placed forward Casey Pierro-Zabotel and defenseman Alex Grant on the injured reserve and put center Jordan Staal went on the injured-non roster list.
