Penguins center Jordan Staal said today he is satisfied with how his infected right foot is progressing, but declined to speculate on when he might be able to resume playing.

"It's tough to say when I'm going to be back," said Staal, who also does not have a timetable for getting back on skates, but said he hopes to resume working out next week.

Team officials have suggested that, in addition to sitting out training camp, he will miss at least the first few weeks of the regular season, which begins Oct. 7.

Staal was injured during the Penguins' second-round playoff series against Montreal this spring.
