Penguins Notebook: Add Kennedy to injury report

Winger Tyler Kennedy missed practice Wednesday at Mellon Arena because of an unspecified injury and, according to coach Dan Bylsma, is considered day to day.

It's not known if he will be available tonight for the game against Ottawa.

Here is the update on other players who have been injured recently:

• Forward Max Talbot practiced after skating on his own lately and is expected to return tonight after missing the past three games because of a groin injury.

• Winger Bill Guerin, who has missed one game because of an undisclosed injury, practiced. He was the only one wearing a baby blue jersey, perhaps indicating no contact. The team will wear its alternate uniforms tonight. During one drill, while his teammates did push-ups, Guerin did sit-ups. He is day to day.

• Defenseman Alex Goligoski, who also has missed one game because of an unspecified problem, did not practice and won't play tonight.

• Winger and enforcer Eric Godard, who limped off the ice Monday on his only shift against the New York Rangers, did not practice. His undisclosed injury is not expected to be a long-term problem.

"We'll find out about a few guys [this] morning," Bylsma said.

The Penguins recalled forward Chris Conner from Wilkes-Barre.

And then there's Kunitz

Left winger Chris Kunitz is separated from the other injured players because he is on injured reserve after having surgery Jan. 6 for an abdominal muscle tear. He could be back before the break for the Olympics next month.

"It's just waiting to get healthy, whether that comes before [the break] or not. If it's after, it's after," Kunitz said. "You want to make sure you're up to speed. Right now it's looking, hopefully, like sometime before the break, but I don't really know for sure."

Kunitz, who had 20 points in 30 games while trying to play through the injury, skated with conditioning coach Mike Kadar before practice and said he has been on the ice a few times over the past several days.

"There's tightness and stuff going on," Kunitz said. "I still have to work out the kinks, scar tissue and stuff like that. The trainers are letting me do a little more every day, depending on how the soreness goes the next day.

"Every time I've been on the ice, it feels a little bit better."

Quality and quantity

After a day off Tuesday, the Penguins had a long practice. Many players were on the ice about 90 minutes.

"We don't have that much of an opportunity to practice," center Sidney Crosby said of an NHL schedule that has been condensed to accommodate the Olympics break. "So we try to make the most of it."

Bylsma started off on a light note. For the first 10 minutes, the team scrimmaged with skaters holding their sticks in the opposite hand -- right-handers shot left, and vice versa -- and the goaltenders holding their sticks by the blades.

The shootout competition toward the end of the session was turned inside-out, too, with those who scored remaining in the competition rather than those who missed.

"Dan always brings this kind of stuff," Talbot said. "It's good for us. It's good to keep things loose. And even when we were losing, this is stuff that he brings.

"It's great. It makes it fun. It's a long season. January, February comes, guys are a little tired, and it's good to have fun out there."

Tip-ins

Center Jordan Staal was the first on the ice and skated nearly two hours. While working on his wrist shot before his teammates joined him, he clanked a shot off the crossbar, and the puck flew over the end-zone netting and broke a piece off an out-of-town scoreboard. ... Bylsma had this crack about Conner, who was sent back to Wilkes-Barre after a two-goal performance Monday against the Rangers: "He should have scored the third one." Bylsma made sure to add that Conner's demotion was based on circumstance, not performance. ... Goaltending coach Gilles Meloche missed practice. He is in Wilkes-Barre working with the younger goalies.
