Craig Patrick is out as general manager of the Penguins.

The move was announced at a press conference early this afternoon.

His successor has not been named.

Patrick, whose contract is about to expire, took over as GM of the team in December 1989 and guided it to Stanley Cup championships in 1991 and 1992 but has received increasing criticism from the press and public in recent years.

He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Penguins finished with the second worst record in the leage this year and again failed to make the playoffs. Their finish, however, did help them in today's draft lottery, where they won the second pick in the June draft.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
