The Western Pennsylvania Golden Gloves finals are returning to a big-ring setting for the first time in more than a decade in Pittsburgh.
In 1991, Joel Wyatt and Richie Felsing, both of Pittsburgh, fought for a regional championship title at the Civic Arena and since then have fought professionally.
Tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m., a brother act is among the participants in the top-level Open division at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Robbie Strauss of Bridgeville fights tonight in a 165-pound semifinal against Rocky Rhodes of Punxsutawney, and his brother Mike Strauss fights in a 141-pound final against Matt Jellison of South Park.
With a victory tonight, Robbie Strauss --already a national champion in another competition at 178 pounds --will box again tomorrow night in the 165 final against Steve Stenick of the 3rd Avenue Gym.
Three women's fights are schedule for tomorrow, including the 125 final between Tiffany Rice and Kimberly Ward of the 3rd Avenue Gym and the Master's championship between Leslee Perella of Carrick and Heather McQuaid of the 3rd Avenue Gym.
The state Golden Gloves finals comes to the convention center May 10.
Tickets are available at the door for $35 VIP, $25 gold ringside, $20 ringside and $15 general admission.
