Usually the sports world is insulated. Usually the games go on no matter what. But what happened in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001, was not usual.

	In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, ballparks, arenas and other places where Americans play, such as PNC Park, were transformed into impromptu cathedrals where players gathered to deal with the tragedy , like everyone else. (Peter Diana, Post-Gazette)

The business of playing games came to a near-total halt almost immediately after the terrorist attacks, in part because air travel was stopped and the teams couldn't travel but mostly out of solemn respect for an overwhelming chapter in history.

A year later, the memories remain vivid and haunting.
