Usually the sports world is insulated. Usually the games go on no matter what. But what happened in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001, was not usual.
The business of playing games came to a near-total halt almost immediately after the terrorist attacks, in part because air travel was stopped and the teams couldn't travel but mostly out of solemn respect for an overwhelming chapter in history.
A year later, the memories remain vivid and haunting.
