Score three goals in first half against No. Virginia Saturday, May 19, 2001 From wire dispatches
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. -- Before his team took the field last night, Riverhounds Coach Kai Haaskivi told his players to score early and often on the Northern Virginia Royals. They did just that.
The Riverhounds scored three first-half goals and cruised to a 3-1 victory at Garfield High School Stadium. The game was a qualifying contest for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The Riverhounds (4-1) got on the scoreboard early against Northern Virginia, a D-3 Pro League team. They scored in the 13th minute when John Jones beat goalkeeper Keith Cox.
The Riverhounds made it 2-0 three minutes later on a goal by Phil Karn off an assist from forward Leidy Klotz. It was Karn's second goal in U.S. Open Cup qualifying play.
Gary DePalma set up the Riverhounds' third goal at the 23-minute mark. He controlled the ball along the touchline, passing it over to forward Welton for the shot. It was Welton's first goal as a Pittsburgh player.
The Royals (0-4) avoided a shutout when Brian Naylor shot from 18 yards out to beat goalkeeper T.J. Hannig. Naylor scored the Royals lone goal in the 86th minute.
Haaskivi said defense was the difference and enabled his team to pick up five points in U.S. Open Cup qualifying.
"We put in some subs in the second half to give the engine a rest and save some of the guys for our game against Hershey," Haaskivi said, referring to tonight's contest at Bethel Park. "This is a good tuneup to allow us to take care of business [tonight]."
The Hershey game is also a U.S. Open Cup Qualifying match.
