Brock Yates' One Lap of America returns to western Pennsylvania with the 30th anniversary edition May 10 at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (formally BeaveRun) in Wampum, Beaver County.
The modern-day version of the Cannonball Run kicks off tomorrow at Tire Rack Wet Skid Pad in South Bend, Ind., and continues for seven days covering 3,407 miles while competing at 10 facilities including a drag strip and several road courses.
The One Lap of America is the ultimate challenge for car enthusiasts and manufactures. Many makes and models are involved and sometimes concept vehicles and soon-to-be-released models. Some of the fastest street-legal cars in the country participate in the One Lap.
Neil Simon, a Washington-based attorney is one of 60 competing in the OLOA this season. It will be his ninth in 12 years with co-driver Woody Hare.
Some One Lap teams consist of two drivers, and, according to Simon, he and Hare enjoy what they do because of the people.
"There is a friendly, competitive aspect involved with the people you run with," Simon said. "It's just so much fun.
"Some days you just don't get any sleep, so having a co-driver is critical. There's no racing on public roads and no timing on public roads so it's evolved from the beginning."
The key to a good trip is getting along with your co-driver.
"You are in a small car for hours, it's good if you are with someone you can get along with," Simon said.
The One Lap of America event will begin at 8:30 a.m. May 10 with the first of two on-track sessions. Spectators are welcomed. Go to www.onelapofamerica.com for more information or www.pittrace.com for details on the event.
