The pins don't know how old you are. Or care. They couldn't stand up to the onslaught by Jason Cooley earlier this week.

Cooley, who will turn 16 March 31, recorded the first perfect game in league play in recent memory in the New Great Valley Junior League. He tossed a 300 in the middle game of a 738 series in the Greater Pittsburgh Y.A.B.A. Travel League Section No. 5 at New Great Valley Lanes.

Cooley averages 202 and 198 in weekly leagues.

Everything's ducky

Joe Marchase (Greenfield) and Joe Sawyer (Sewickley) each won championships in a "doubleheader" sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Duckpins Tournament Association at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association.

Marchase rolled games of 191 and 191 in the roll-offs and averaged 176 for five games. Sawyer was second and Ed Lyons (Monaca) third. In the second event, Sawyer defeated Marchase in the two-game final, 341-308.

West View's Bill Dlugos defeated Sam Reich (Pittsburgh) to become King of the Hill.

The season comes to an end with the grand finals Saturday at the PAA, starting at 1 p.m. First prize will be $750.

The 800 Club

Joe Larson threw a 299/812 for the Handslappers and Ed Cox had a 289/804 in the Thursday Men's Master league at New Great Valley Lanes.

Perfecto

Kendall Wilson tossed his first 300 and had a 703 series as a member of the Pitt team in the Coors Light Doubles League at Lokay Lanes.

PAT Bus drivers are making all the right turns in the Thursday Coors Light Classic League at Playmor Bowl. Bob Koman fired a 300/729 for his first 300 just a week after Bill Weiss threw his.

Curt Mitchell tossed 21 consecutive strikes in games of 268 and 300 and then cooled off for a 183 and 751 series in the Char-Val Petersen League at Sports Haven Bowl.

Scholastic standouts

Chartiers Valley's Bill Giehll (257/709), Langley's Will Lehrman (247/687) and Montour's John Munsick (258) and Bill Cutrone (692) topped the charts for the boys in Week 9 of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League.

The section leaders are Hempfield (West), Baldwin (South), Chartiers Valley (North) and Moon (West).

For the girls, Penn-Trafford's Danielle Holodnak (216/534), Montour's Carrie Sulima (220/561) and Kristen Massucci (213) and West Allegheny's Ashley Cooke (200) took top honors.

The section leaders are Hempfield (East), West Mifflin (North), North Hills (North) and Montour (West).

The tournament trail

Dud Snider (Paden City, W.Va.) defeated Tod Thompson (Jewet, Ohio) in the final match, 234-213, to win the weekly head-to-head tournament at All American Lanes in Steubenville, Ohio. He averaged 229. The strike pot has grown to $3,150.

Wayne Chabassol defeated Steve Hoesch in the final match, 244-190, to win Week 16 of the Miller Lite Head-to-Head tournament at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.

There still are openings for the 4 p.m. squad time today at North Versailles Bowling Center that completes competition in the Greater Pittsburgh Mixed Doubles tournament. To enter, call 412-824-6700. The current team leaders are Rebecca and Woody Smith (1,452), Jill and David Swick (1,428) and Janice and Arnold Gore (1,428).

On a roll

Dave Berman threw games of 239, 268 and 279 for a 786 series and Buzzy Sherred had a 277/761 to lead the way in the Bud Light $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

What's happening

The Pittsburgh Bowlers Tour is sponsoring a scratch tournament today at West Pike Bowl, with $1,000 for first place. The entry fee is $40.
