Bowling: WPIBL season under way with record number teams

A record number of boys' and girls' teams (25) took to the lanes this week to open the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League season.

Baldwin's Steve Sobkiewicz took honors for the boys with a 278/731, followed by Ambridge's Shawn Oslick (277/723) and Moon's Mike Conway (247/702).

The high individual game was a 288 by Gary McMillen of Chartiers Valley.

Other top scores were posted by North Hills' Ryan Horvath (236) and Bill Lapsley (233), Quaker Valley's Greg Fredrick (233) and Ray Bollinger (234), Langley's Wayne Warner (234), Chartiers Valley's Mike Lambros (233), Woodland Hills' Josh Kubecka (233), Hempfield's Mario Sollecchio (242), Nathan Shively (267) and Jason Torrance (242), Baldwin's Jason Imampietro (233), Ambridge's Matt Fornadel (278), Bishop Canevin's Anthony Trapuzzano (234) and OLSH's Luke Schleicher (235).

The girls also got off to a rousing start, with Hempfield's Jen Dalicandro recording the high series of 616 and Greensburg Salem's Amanda Steele with high game of 256.

The only other 600 series was turned in by Hempfield's Tara Kane (223/613).

Greensburg Salem's Samantha Steele (256), Penn-Trafford's Danielle Holodnick (245) and West Mifflin's Christina Galonis (223) had top games.

Traveling along

Shawn Pilyih (Swissvale Arcade Lanes) threw a 289 to lead the way at White Oak Bowl in the Pittsburgh Area Scratch Travel League. Joe Brown (Lokay Lanes) had a 268 and Jack Eyerman (Pines Plaza Lanes) a 267. Rich Wahlster (Sheffield Lanes) had the high series of 891. Ron Franceski's 227.41 is high average for the league, followed by Greg Nesbit's 215.25 and Pilyih's 215.08. Sheffield Lanes continued to hold onto first place.

The league will bowl next Sunday at Rosedale Lanes.

The tournament trail

Brian Hamsher (Sugarcreek, Ohio) defeated Mike Montgomery (Toronto, Ohio) in the final match, 194-170, to win the weekly head-to-head tournament at All American Lanes in Steubenville, Ohio.

DOT.GIF Justin Pisarski defeated Bob Mokricky Jr. in a two-frame roll-off to win Week 8 of the Miller Lite Head-to-Head tournament at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes. They tied at 197 in the final match.

DOT.GIF Chris Kasten defeated Russ Griffin, 234-190, in the final match to win Week No. 9 of the Miller Lite Head-to-Head tournament at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.

League leaders

John Fichter's 224 average tops the chart in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl, followed by Dave Berman's 220 and Dave Davison's 215.

DOT.GIF Ed Keefe's 223.93 average leads the Coors Lite Classic League at South Hills Bowl, followed by John Fichter's 218.10 and George Logue's 213.79. Mary Dodds is high for the women at 197.85.

The 800 Club

Michael Ley fired games of 279, 256 and 266 in the Levelgreen League at Miracle Lanes in Monroeville.

Perfecto

Tony Podobnik Jr. threw his second career 300 in the third game of a 776 series in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

On a roll

John Fichter had games of 278, 278 and 226 for a 782 series to headline the Coors Light Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

DOT.GIF It kept getting better and better for Steve Magdic, who started with a 224 and added games of 278 and 296 for a 798 for WABCO at North Versailles Bowling Center.

DOT.GIF Dave Berman's 289/761 and Augie Burkhart's 288/754 were the headliners in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

DOT.GIF Neil Broadus threw a 267/770 to lead the way in the Coors Light League at new Great Valley Lanes.

What's happening

The Pittsburgh Bowlers Tour is sponsoring a scratch doubles tournament today at Plaza Lanes and a handicap singles event at Freeway Lanes next Sunday.

DOT.GIF The Tri-State Bowlers Tour is sponsoring a scratch singles tournament next Sunday at Manor Lanes (near Uniontown), with $1,000 guaranteed for first place. Entry fee is $60. The squad times are 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. There will be a $200 bonus for the high series in the 9 a.m. squad. The high game and high series will receive new bowling balls.
