Bowling: Hempfield wins state title

This is the final bowling column of the season. The column will resume in the fall. Thanks to everybody who contributed scores and story ideas.

Hempfield, led by Nathan Shively and Jason Torrance, finished in first place in Boys' Division A at the Pennsylvania State High School Championships last week at Berks Lanes & Bowl-O-Rama in Reading.

Shively was the only participant from the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League (WPIBL) to be named first-team all-state. Baldwin's Daryl Sherred and Torrance were second team.

Baldwin finished second and Hempfield third in Girls' Division A.

Hempfield's Tara Kane, whose 775 was high series, and Jenn Ridilla, who was second with a 724, were first-team all-state. Baldwin's Ashley Kessler was on the second team.

The All-WPIBL boys' first team is Greensburg Central Catholic's Aaron Yuhouse, Hempfield's Luke Newmeyer, Baldwin's Steve Sobkiewicz, Woodland Hills' Branden Douglass and Baldwin's Sherred.

The girls' team is Greensburg Salem's Samantha Steele, Hempfield's Melissa Black, Ridilla and Kane and Baldwin's Kessler.

The tournament trail

Terry Kuhnheim defeated Art Boehm, 230-195, to win Week 20 of the Miller Lite Head-to-Head tournament at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes. Mike Repasky defeated Mike Figurski, 267-199, to win Week 21.

There will be a tournament next Sunday, starting at 8:15 p.m.

Charlie Whiteman (Wellsburg, W.Va.) defeated Chuck Ferry (Martin's Ferry, Ohio), 245-184, to win the weekly Head-to-Head tournament at All American Lanes in Steubenville.

Bryan Bailey picked up $1,600 by winning the scratch event sponsored by the Pittsburgh Bowlers Tour at West Pike Bowl. Bob Ulish won $800 with a win in a handicap tournament at Sheffield Lanes.

The 800 Club

Griff Williams, a member of the Pittsburgh Bowling Hall of Fame, celebrated his first 800 series with games of 278, 290 and 278 for an 846 in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

Perfecto

Jim Kopinski and Mark Whatling tossed 300s in the Wednesday Classic League at Pines Plaza Lanes in North Hills.

Mike Pusateri threw a 300/754 at Nesbits' Lanes in Plum.

Kevin Ford's 300 in the Miracle Mixed Trio League at Miracle Lanes in Monroeville was his first perfect game.

Pete Baumiller had a 300 in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

On a roll

Joe Lowrie Jr. had a 270/761 in the Wednesday Classic League at Pines Plaza Lanes.

Dave Adams (269/769), Ted Dattisman (279/792) and Jeff Martin (297/753) were the headliners at AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.

Rich Gayla's 264/751 led the way in the Thursday Men's Master League at New Great Valley Lanes in North Versailles.

Ramon Estrada pitched a 277/760 in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

Jay Schultz posted a 259/761 to take honors in the Budweiser Quads League at New Great Valley Lanes in North Versailles.

League leaders

Griff Williams tops the Coors Light $10,000 Classic with a 220.89 average and Dave Keefe leads the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic at South Hills Bowl.

What's happening

Teams from across the state are expected to compete in the 57th annual Pennsylvania American Legion tournament at White Oak Bowl the weekends of April 27-28, May 4-5, 11-12 and 18-19. For more information, call Jack White, 412-751-7540.
