Bowling: Playmor Bowl team captures Super Bowl tournament

A five-player team of 14- and 15-year-olds from Playmor Bowl in Lincoln Place won the championship in the Super Bowl Sunday handicap tournament at Holiday Lanes that was sponsored by the Greater Pittsburgh Young American Bowling Alliance.

Each of the 36 teams of boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 20 bowled 12 games.

Holiday Lanes was the runner-up.

Playmor's team, coached by Ken Antol and Rich Baker, was comprised of captain Jason Pugh, Danielle Baker, Deanna Rubenstein, Christine Galanis and Drew Antol.

Traveling along

Harley Schultz continued his hot streak with games of 246, 214, 290 and 237 for a 987 series at Sheffield Lanes to lead the way in the Pittsburgh Area Scratch Travel League.

Other top scores were posted by Adam Deiulus (268), Dave Homol (267) and Randy Peck (700).

Pines Plaza regained first place, followed by Brannan's Bowl and Sheffield Lanes. The league will compete at Playmor Bowl next Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Scholastic standouts

Hempfield's Scott Zemba (278/664), South Allegheny's Dane Gyduska (249/675), OLSH's Greg Lang (247/665) and North Allegheny's Brad McCullough (237/664) created the headlines for the boys in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League.

For the girls, Hempfield's Jen Ridilla (216/605) and Melissa Black (208/596), Montour's Alyson Buhonick (217/563) took honors.

On a roll

Jeff Gmuer (211 average) threw a 269/773 in the Wednesday Classic League at Pines Plaza Lanes in North Hills.

Doug Kerchner pitched a 278/739 in the Budweiser Quads League at New Great Valley Lanes in North Versailles.

Marty Welsh (140 average) rolled his highest game with a 214 in the Bowlers Aren't Us League at Swissvale Arcade Lanes.

Pete Coppola's 277/758 was the marquee score in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl.

The tournament trail

Sam Krupinski (Adena, Ohio) defeated Jeff Germann (Wheeling, W.Va.) in the final match, 226-207, to win Week 19 of the Head-to-Head tournament at All American Lanes in Steubenville. Krupinski averaged 238.

League leader

Dave Keefe's 215.90 average tops the Bud Lite Classic League at South Hills Bowl, followed by John Fichter's 213.70 and Shawn Pilyih's 212.97. Dean Honda is in first place with a healthy lead over Reflex Staffing and Bowlers Depot.
