Bowling: WPIBL leaders roll to 2-0 starts

Aaron Yuhouse has posted the high game (276) and high series (727) in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League this season while leading Greensburg Central Catholic (2-0) to first place in the East Boys' Division.

The other league leaders are Baldwin's Chad Cygnarowicz (718), Daryl Sherred (681) and Matt Cenci (267) and Greensburg Central Catholic's Caleb Damiani (264).

Baldwin and South Allegheny are tied at 2-0 in the Southeast, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and North Hills are 2-0 in the North, and Montour, Chartiers Valley and Canevin are 2-0 in the Southwest.

For the girls, Baldwin's Ashley Kessler has high game (247), high series (631) and high average (198). teammate Nikki Shore pitched a 235/586.

In the East, Hempfield's Melissa Black leads the way with a 197 average and a 246/607. North Allegheny's Melissa Gottron (213/546) has the honors in the North and Montour's Alyson Buhonick is tops in the Southwest with a 220/549.

Hempfield and Penn-Trafford are 2-0 in the East, Baldwin is 2-0 in the Southeast, Ambridge, North Hills and OLSH are 2-0 in the North and Canevin and Montour are 2-0 in the Southeast.

Traveling along

Mike Popovich Jr. (Sheffield Lanes) had high game with a 289 and Bruce Baggiani (Brannan's Bowl) high four-game series of 932 in the Pittsburgh Area Scratch Travel League at Brannan's Bowl in McKees Rocks. Other top scores were Rich Coward's 277/911, Henry Austin's 266 and Harley Schultz's 913.

Pines Plaza Lanes remained in first place with 45 points, followed by Brannan's Bowl and Plaza Lanes.

The league returns to action Jan. 6 at Kennedy Lanes.

The tournament trail

Adam Barta picked up $1,200 by winning the scratch mid-year tournament at Playmor Lanes in Lincoln Place that was sponsored by the Pittsburgh Bowlers. Jim Wolcott earned $600 for second place.

Bill DeVault (Weirton, W.Va.) won week 12 of the Head to Head tournament at All American Lanes in Steubenville, Ohio, with a 228-184 victory against Chuck Bennett (Martins Ferry, Ohio) in the final. DeVault averaged 226 for the tournament.

On a roll

The pins were falling fast and furious during the Thursday Night Coors Light League at Miracle Lanes in Monroeville. Max Barnyk led the hit parade with game of 300, 257 and 236 for a 793. Other high rollers were Ray Williams (289/784), Frank Hussman (279/782), Frank Dodds (299/771) and Don Stahl (278/757).

Myron Hudson's 268/793 was the highlight in the Wednesday Classic League at Swissvale Bowl-A-Rama.

Tony Laird tossed a 279/793 in the Rankin Croatian Businessmen League at Swissvale Arcade Lanes.

John DeGiovanni had a 268/759 in the Monday Night Classic League at Sharpsburg Lanes.

Larry Forgacs topped the Coors Light $10,000 Classic league at South Hills Bowl with a 267/758.

Jeff Martin's 259/758 was high at the AMF Mt. Lebanon Lanes.

Damon Deorio (279/756) and Ron Sventy Jr. (279/752) were the leaders in the Coors Light Players League at AMF Noble Manor Lanes in Crafton.

Chris Kasten's 268/757 led the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic at South Hills Bowl.

League leaders

Griff Williams leads the Coors Light $10,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl with a 216.42 average, followed but Steve Hoesch (211.45) and Nick Roman (205.55).

John Fichter's 214.11 average heads the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl, followed by Ramon Estrada's 213.74 and Dave Keefe's 213.46.

Johnny Burns, who tops the Sundodger League at Noble Manor Lanes in Crafton with a 211 average, threw a 298/707.

Never too young

Jeff Payne, 11, opened with eight strikes and finished with a 254 in the Word of God League for the high junior game of the year at Swissvale Bowl-A-Rama. Payne, who averages 160 in two leagues, and Antonio Palangio, 10, recently won the Prep Boys Scratch Doubles event (ages 9-11) of the Greater YABA tournament at Nesbits' Lanes in Plum.
