Pirates Notebook: Victims fund set up at PNC Park
Sunday, September 16, 2001 By Robert Dvorchak
Fans attending tomorrow's game between the Mets and Pirates will have several opportunities to express their support for those who were directly affected by last week's terrorist attacks.
Beginning at 3 p.m., fans can donate money to the United Way Sept. 11th Fund at several locations outside PNC Park. Pirates players will make the first donations.
On Federal Street before the game, a 50-by-15-foot "God Bless America" banner will be available for fans to sign. During the day, the banner will be displayed on the Riverwalk wall facing the city.
After the series ends Wednesday, the banner will be sent to the Mets and their fans.
The team also hopes to pass out miniature American flags to all fans, but availability is uncertain because of shipping problems related to the attacks.
The series was supposed to be played at Shea Stadium, which is unavailable because its parking lots are being used as a staging area for rescue and recovery crews.
