Bowling: Double the fun in mixed win

The team of Doris Morgan and Rich McKeithen won the Greater Pittsburgh Mixed Doubles tournament at Brannan Bowl in McKees Rock that attracted 411 couples and distributed nearly $6,000 in prize money.

Morgan and McKeithen knocked down 1380 pins to pick up $750.

Thomas Coquet and Teresa Coquet were runners-up.

The 800 club

Dave Davison started his first game with a split and a nine count, then threw 11 strikes for a 279. He came back with a 268 and capped the night off with a 300 for an 847 series in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League at South Hills Bowl. It was Davison's second perfect game in the league this year.

Clark Candy, led by Davison's 847, threw a 3525 series 3/4 Mike Meighen(687), Tony Podobnik Jr. (685), Denny Santoro (663) and Dave Show (643). Clark Candy is in first place.

The tournament trail

John Fichter defeated Jeff Martin, 206-181, to win Week 16 of the Miller Lite Head-to-Head tournament at AMF Mt. Lebanon lanes. The tournament continues tonight, starting at 8:15. Entry fee is $20.

Christopher Eyritz and Lisa Eyritz won the Adult/Youth championship for the fall session at Arsenal Lanes in Lawrenceville. Cory Callan and Darlene Callan captured the Adult/Youth Bumper Division.

Traveling along

Jay Schultz (North Versailles) posted his first sanctioned 300 game and his older brother Harley (North Versailles) rolled a 279 to highlight the action in the Pittsburgh Area Scratch Travel League at South Hills Bowl.

Henry Austin (Plaza Lanes) had high three-game scratch series of 737, followed by Rich Wahlster (Sheffield Lanes) with a 719. Wahlster leads the league with a 219.20 average, with 26 bowlers averaging 200 or better.

Sheffield Lanes has an 11-pin lead over second-place Pines Plaza Lanes with three weeks left in the season.

Scholastic stars

Matt Bonacci pitched a 257/693 to lead West Mifflin (5-4) to a 7-0 victory against Canevin (1-8) in the Central Division of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Bowling League (WPIBL). WM's Jon Rebmann had a 257/672, Chad Cygnarowicz a 245/665 and Jim McHugh a 232/665.

Everything's ducky

Ira Summers defeated Joe Sawyer (Sewickley) to win the regular match-play tournament in the Western Pennsylvania Duckpin Series at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. Despite the loss, Sawyer took over the points lead and will be top seeded in the Grand Finals Saturday at the PAA. Sawyer rolled the high game of the season with a 230.

League leaders

John Fichter (228.92 and Griff Williams (222.49) lead the way in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League.

Pete Baumiller's 205.9 tops the Pittsburgh Moose All Men's League at South Hills Bowl.

Joe Welsh and Lou DelRosso finished first in the doubles competition at Swissvale Bowl-A-Rama in the annual Braddock Hills VFD triathalon. The other events are pool and shuffleboard. The high bowling scores were Art Stevens' 247 and Ken Cooley's 231.

Perfecto

Alonzo Hunter rolled a 300 in the High Ballers #5 League at Klein's Lanes in Wilkinsburg.

Jim Petzel rolled a 300/793 in the Bud Lite $12,000 Classic League.

High roller

Marshall McKallip tossed a 279/757 in the Wednesday Men's Classic League at Rosedale Lanes in Penn Hills.

You're never too young dept.

Chris Pofi, 14, recorded the first 700 series for a junior at Sharpsburg Lanes with a 277/713 in the Saturday Juniors. He is a right-hander with a 156 average.
