High School Highlights: North Allegheny, Ambridge advance in PIAA volleyball

North Allegheny and Ambridge, the WPIAL's reigning boys volleyball champs, advanced to the PIAA semifinals Saturday with victories.

North Allegheny, the WPIAL's Class AAA champion seven consecutive years, earned its ninth semifinal berth in the past 12 years with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of WPIAL runner-up Bethel Park, in a match at Pine-Richland.

Tommy Keisling led North Allegheny with 11 kills, while David Haas contributed seven. Tigers setter Joe Murphy had 32 assists, 5 kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks.

North Allegheny will face District 3 runner-up Central Dauphin in the semifinals Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. Central Dauphin earned a return trip to the semifinals with a win against Central York.

Ambridge, the WPIAL's Class AA champ five of the past six years, earned its fifth semifinal berth in the past six years with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-23 sweep of District 10 champion Saegertown in a quarterfinal at Slippery Rock High School.

"We started a bit slow, but, eventually, got into a rhythm and played well," Ambridge coach Glenn Freed said. "Saegertown is one of the best teams in the state, so sweeping them is something to be proud of."

Lee Smith led Ambridge with 26 kills and Brandon Buck contributed 12. Aaron Mueller had 47 assists.

Ambridge will face WPIAL runner-up Derry in a semifinal Tuesday, at a site and time to be determined. Derry earned its semifinal berth with a win against Lancaster Menonnite in a quarterfinal at Hollidaysburg.

Matt Vasinko and Josh Wannamaker led Derry with 17 and 14 kills. Andy Panizzi had 48 assists for the Trojans.

Boys lacrosse

• North Allegheny 9, Carlisle 5: Behind a balanced scoring attack, North Allegheny defeated Carlisle to advance to the PIAA semifinals, where it will face LaSalle College. Six players scored for the Tigers, led by Alec McGovern's three goals.

Girls lacrosse

• Peters Township 16, State College 4: WPIAL champion Peters Township advanced to the PIAA semifinals with a victory against District 6 champion State College. Sarah Bootman and Hannah Wilcox each had a team-high four goals. The Indians will face Radnor in the semifinals Tuesday.
