Defending PIAA champions and No. 1-ranked Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic extended its winning streak to 17 games with a convincing, 63-19 season-opening Eastern Conference win Friday night at Northgate.

Jerome Turner ran for four touchdowns and 137 yards for the Trojans, who finished 16-0 last season. North Catholic's defense forced three turnovers and only allowed two first downs. The Trojans outgained the Flames, 414-142.

Trojans quarterback Adam Sharlow completed 8 of 13 passes for 64 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to Darian Mercurio.


Springdale 41, Serra Catholic 7

Adam Lock threw a 36-yard touchdown pass and returned a fumble 47 yards for another touchdown to help the Dynamos beat host Serra in the Eastern Conference.

Jeannette 48, Riverview 6

The fourth-ranked Jayhawks rolled past the visiting Raiders in the Eastern Conference,

Avonworth 37, Char-Houston 13

Kevin Simpson rushed for two touchdowns to help the visiting Antelopes win at Chartiers-Houston in the Black Hills Conference. Paul Heflin returned an interception 29 yards for a score for Avonworth, which led, 14-6, at halftime.

Neshannock 52, S.S. Beaver 13

Robert Lindsey scored five touchdowns as the No. 5 Lancers rolled to victory against the host Rams in the Big Seven Conference. Lindsey scored on rushes of 1, 1, 3 and 10 yards and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Frank Antuono, who also returned a fumble 11 yards for a score.

Fort Cherry 27, OLSH 26

Brian Carnegie recovered a fumble for a touchdown with 17 seconds remaining in regulation and Nicholas Rogers kicked an extra-point to lift the Rangers past the Chargers in a Black Hills Conference game at Robert Morris. Nick Cook scored on runs of 14 and 69 yards for Fort Cherry.

Greensburg CC 15, Monessen 12

Brian Pevarnik ran for two touchdowns and kicked the winning field goal with 1.8 seconds left to lift the No. 3 Centurions past the visiting Greyhounds in the Eastern Conference.

Beth-Center 34, Mapletown 6

Anthony Welsh and Nico Brown rushed for all five Beth-Center touchdowns as the Bulldogs rolled past host Maples in the Tri-County South. Welsh finished with 209 yards on 13 carries.

Frazier 43, Avella 0

Hunter Patterson rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another and Frazier shut out visiting Avella in the Tri-County South.

Clairton 70, California 0

In Clairton coach Wayne Wade's debut, the No.2-ranked Bears blasted host California in a non-conference game.

Union 26, Rochester 22

The host Scotties held off the Rams in the Big Seven Conference.

Carmichaels 30, Bentworth 13

Mike Blasinsky rushed for three touchdowns to help the Mighty Mikes overcome a 6-0, first-quarter deficit and a 13-12 halftime deficit against the visiting Bearcats in the Tri-County South.

Brentwood 42, Vincentian 28

The Spartans brushed aside a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to rally past a Vincentian team making its WPIAL debut in a non-conference game. The Royals began a football program last season when they played as an independent.

Jeff-Morgan 14, West Greene 0

The Rockets shut out the host Pioneers in the Tri-County South.
