It was a “three-peat” for Shady Side Academy’s Chris Grubbs, but a first for his partner.

Grubbs and Michael Kann won the WPIAL Class AAA doubles tennis championship Tuesday at Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia when they beat North Allegheny’s Kevin Goth and Jared Isaacs, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).

It was the third consecutive year that Grubbs, a senior, was part of the championship team. The past two were with Alok Nimgaonkar. This was the first title for Kann, a sophomore. It was the fourth consecutive year a team from Shady Side Academy finished first.

In Class AA, it was a familiar story; a team from Sewickley Academy won. Senior Luke Vith and freshman Ryan Gex defeated Winchester Thurston’s Charlie Orr and Max Pollack, 6-2, 6-3. It was the fifth time in six years a Sewickley Academy team won the title. It was the first title for Vith and Gex.

Only the top two teams in Class AAA advance to the PIAA tournament May 23-24 in Hershey. In Class AA, three teams advance. Sewickley Academy’s Dan McCormick and Andrew Parda beat Valley’s Cody Schrecongost and Josh Denham, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, for third in Class AA.
