High school highlights: Riverside strikes Gould

After a 36-point loss in December to Neshannock, Riverside knew it would need a special effort to get some payback Friday night in a rematch.

Zach Gould was up for the challenge.

Gould made seven 3-pointers and scored 45 points to help host Riverside stun Class AA No. 3 Neshannock, 84-67, in Section 2.

Gould, a junior guard, went 14 of 14 from the free-throw line and increased his season average to 22.1 points per game.

Riverside (7-8, 4-4) outscored Neshannock (11-3, 6-2), 18-2, in the second quarter to take control.

Logan Sheridan added 26 points for Riverside.

Ethan Moose led Neshannock with 24 points.

Other top boys games

■ Ryan Luther scored a team-high 14 points to help Class AAAA No. 2 Hampton (14-1, 7-1) gain a 50-38 win at North Hills (8-7, 3-5) in Section 3. Luther had missed the previous three games with an ankle injury.

■ Jordon Payne scored 17 points and Khalil Perdue added 15 to help McKeesport (6-8, 3-5) deal visiting Fox Chapel (11-4, 4-4) a 64-53 loss in Class AAAA Section 2.

■ Britton Beachy's 27 points helped host Canon-McMillan (9-5, 5-2) edge Bethel Park (10-3, 5-2), 66-63, in Class AAAA Section 4.

■ Duane Brown scored 24 points and Summit Academy (10-3, 5-0) used a 27-13 fourth-quarter edge to slip past host Apollo-Ridge (12-2, 4-2), 68-67, in Class AA Section 1.

■ Maverick Rowan's 35 points vaulted Class A No. 1 Lincoln Park (12-1, 5-0) to a 101-50 home win against No. 5 Western Beaver (11-3, 3-2) in Section 1. Nick Miller led Western Beaver with 21 points.


■ Monessen's Joe Salvino picked up his 550th coaching win, as the Class A No. 3 Greyhounds (9-4, 4-0) toppled visiting Clairton (4-3, 2-1), 56-41, in Section 3. Salvino has a career record of 550-224.

■ Hempfield's Kason Harrell scored 20 points, including the 1,000th of his career, in leading Class AAAA No. 4 Hempfield (12-1, 7-0) to a 63-50 win at Norwin (9-6, 3-4) in Section 1. Harrell, a junior, has 1,003 career points.

■ Owen Nearhoof of Mars scored his 1,000th career point in helping the host Planets (9-5, 6-1) defeat Valley (5-8, 1-6), 74-47, in Class AAA Section 1. Nearhoof scored 21 points in the game and has 1,017 in his career.

■ Union's Ben Young has 1,000 career points after scoring 25 for the Scotties (6-10, 2-3) in a 71-63 win at Rochester (3-11, 0-5) in Class A Section 1.

Stars of the night

■ Brandon Lawless poured in 37 points to help Carmichaels (11-2, 3-1) roll to a 69-42 win against visiting Mapletown (5-8, 1-3) in Class A Section 3. Lawless scored 20 of his team's 24 third-quarter points.

■ Cameron Johnson's 39 points led Class A No. 4 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (10-4, 4-1) to an 81-55 win against visiting Cornell (8-6, 1-4) in Section 1.
