Montour's wrestling team lost, 31-26, Wednesday night at Hopewell, but still captured the top spot in the Class AAA Section 4B standings.
Hopewell's victory, coupled with West Allegheny's 58-15 win against Blackhawk, leaves the three teams tied for first place at 4-1.
The WPIAL tiebreaker procedure counts the number of individual victories each team had in their head-to-head competition. Montour recorded 15 wins to claim the top spot and a home site next week in the Section 4 tournament, while West Allegheny finished second and Hopewell third.
"This is the first time in the 28-year history of our program that we've qualified for the WPIAL team tournament," Montour coach Jason Bombardier said. "We are now in uncharted territory."
Joe Sheedy (120), Cole Macek (195) and Josh Cain (220) had pins for Montour. Travis Sonson (126) had a pin for Hopewell.
