Aliquippa came up short in its attempt to win a WPIAL Class AA championship, but the Quips had the most players any WPIAL squad on the Class AA all-state team, selected by writers around Pennsylvania.
Three Aliquippa players made all-state — running back Terry Swanson, offensive lineman Jaleel Fields and Dravon Henry, who was selected as an “athlete.”
South Fayette, the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA champion, had two players on the all-state team — quarterback Brett Brumbaugh and “athlete” Justin Watson.
Brumbaugh also was selected Class AA player of the year while South Fayette coach Joe Rossi was selected the Class AA coach of the year.
The Class AAAA all-state team also was released Wednesday and nine players from the WPIAL made it. WPIAL champion Central Catholic had two players selected — defensive lineman Zack DeLuca and linebacker Niko Thorpe. Mt. Lebanon also had two players selected — receiver Troy Apke and offensive lineman Alex Bookser.
Other selections from the WPIAL were North Allegheny receiver Elijah Zeise, Bethel Park offensive lineman Mike Grimm, Upper St. Clair defensive lineman Ben Huss and Gateway defensive back Montae Nicholson.
The Class AAA and A teams will be released today.
