High school highlights: Bethel Park upsets No. 2 Pine-Richland

Stacey Kazalas recorded 19 kills to lead No. 7 seed Bethel Park to a 3-0 upset against No. 2 Pine-Richland in a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal Tuesday at North Hills High School.

The 25-19, 25-20, 25-23 victory earned Bethel Park its first semifinal berth.

The Blackhawks will face No. 3 Shaler in the semifinals Thursday.

Other Class AAA

■ Shaler reached its first semifinal since 1991 with a 3-1 come-from-behind win against No. 6 Penn-Trafford.

■ No. 5 Norwin is in the semifinals for the first time since 1993 after a 3-2 win against No. 4 Seneca Valley. The Raiders took a commanding. 2-0 lead before the Knights rebounded to win the final three games.

■ No. 1 North Allegheny reached its eighth consecutive semifinal with a 27-25, 25-18, 25-17 sweep against No. 8 Hempfield.

Class AA

■ Celina Sanks recorded 12 kills and Schaely Renfrew had 10 to lead No. 6 Knoch to a 3-1 upset against No. 3 Thomas Jefferson. The Knights jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Jaguars won the third game, 25-18, before Knoch closed out the win and reached its first semifinal since 2003.

■ No. 4 Hopewell earned its 10th semifinal berth in the past 12 years with a 3-1 win against No. 5 Seton-LaSalle.

■ No. 2 Freeport earned its fourth semifinal berth in the past five years with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory against No. 7 Central Valley.

Class A

■ Defending WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic, the No. 2 seed, earned a return trip to the semifinals with a sweep of No. 10 Carlynton, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17.

■ No. 1 Bishop Canevin earned its fourth consecutive semifinal berth with a sweep of No. 8 Serra Catholic, 25-7, 25-19, 25-18.

■ No. 12 Neshannock earned its first semifinal berth with a 3-2 quarterfinal upset of No. 4 Shenango.
