Hopewell trips Mars for quarterfinal win

Defending 3-time Class AA champ gets shocked, 2-1

Chloe Work scored off a corner kick with 7:48 left to give No. 8 Hopewell a 2-1 upset Wednesday at No. 1 Mars in a quarterfinal.

Abby Losco also scored for Hopewell (14-4), while Tori Kopchak scored for Mars (15-2-2).

Other Class AA

■ Central Valley 3, Belle Vernon 1: Carolina Lucci's 35th goal of the season propelled the No. 2 Warriors (17-0) to a win against the Leopards (14-5-1) at Hopewell.

■ South Park 3, Quaker Valley 2: Jenny Vietmeier scored on a breakaway in the second half to snap a 2-2 tie and the No. 5 Eagles (15-3-2) held on to defeat the No. 4 Quakers (18-2) at Baldwin.

■ Moon 1, Yough 0: Megan Schoeneweis scored on a penalty kick with 13:13 remaining to give the No. 4 Tigers (19-1) a win against the Cougars (15-5) at Baldwin.

Class AAA

■ Peters Township 1, Pine-Richland 0 (SO): Madison Santo scored the decisive goal for the Indians (15-4-1), who edged the Rams (12-6-2), 4-2, in a shootout at Chartiers Valley.

■ Upper St. Clair 2, Fox Chapel 1: The No. 12 Panthers (11-5-2) got goals from Olivia Belack and Emma Hasco to upset No. 4 Fox Chapel (17-2-1) at Chartiers Valley.

■ Bethel Park 3, Gateway 1: Tatiana Ruzzini's two goals helped the Black Hawks (17-2-1) defeat the Gators (10-8-1) at Elizabeth Forward.

■ Seneca Valley 2, Canon-McMillan 0: Goals by Sarah Anderson and Alicia Hart allowed the No. 1 Raiders (16-2-1) to edge the visiting Big Macs (13-4-3).

Class A

■ Greensburg Central Catholic 7, Springdale 1: Frannie Crouse scored five goals to lead the No. 1 Centurions (16-1) past Springdale (12-7) at Elizabeth Forward.

■ Sewickley Academy 1, Bishop Canevin 0 (OT): Sophia Werner scored seven minutes into overtime to help the Panthers (11-6-3) upset No. 2 Bishop Canevin (16-3-1) at Hopewell.

■ New Brighton 4, Neshannock 3: Maya Watkins scored four goals to give the Lions (11-6-1) a win against No. 4 Neshannock (12-3-3) at Seneca Valley.

■ Shady Side Academy 4, Avonworth 0: Maggie Scott scored twice in helping the No. 2 Indians (16-3) edge the Antelopes (15-5) at Mars.

PIAA golf championships

■ Thomas Steve fired an even-par 71 to help Upper St. Clair claim the Class AAA boys team title at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. Sewickley Academy placed third in Class AA.

■ Macky Fouse shot a 7-over 79 in leading Central Valley to the Class AA team title. Penn-Trafford finished second in Class AAA.
