Mike Caputo during his West Allegheny playing days.

Mike Caputo began his redshirt junior year at the University of Wisconsin with an impressive performance on national television.
Caputo, the 2009 Post-Gazette player of the year at West Allegheny High School, had a team-high 15 tackles in the Badgers' 28-24 loss to LSU last Saturday night. A starting safety, Caputo had six solo tackles, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.
Caputo is coming off a sophomore season in which he started 12 games and was second on the team in tackles with 63.
* This season, Caputo is one of two former WPIAL products starting on Wisconsin's defense. Arthur Goldberg, a redshirt sophomore from Mt. Lebanon, started at nose guard against LSU and had five tackles.
* In his first college game, Toledo freshman Terry Swanson, an Aliquippa graduate, rushed for 45 yards on six carries in a 54-20 victory against New Hampshire.
* Frannie Crouse finished her career at Greensburg Central Catholic last season as the WPIAL's all-time leading goal scorer. Apparently, she still has a nose for the net in college. Crouse is starting as a freshman at Penn State and scored the only goal in the Nittany Lions' 1-0 victory against West Virginia to open the season.
