WPIAL Class A Roundup: Fort Cherry scores with :02 left for victory

Matt Heslin's 14-yard touchdown pass to Koltan Kobrys with two seconds remaining in the game propelled Fort Cherry (9-1, 8-1) to a 33-26 Black Hills Conference victory against upset-minded Chartiers-Houston (6-3, 5-3).

The Buccaneers led, 26-25, before the final play. The touchdown catch was the fourth score of the game for Kobrys.

Kobrys entered the game as the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL and added to his total with 201 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns.


North Catholic 35, Leechburg 14

Jerome Turner scampered from 24 and 9 yards to complete a perfect regular season for the No. 2-ranked Trojans (9-0, 8-0) in a victory against the Blue Devils (2-7, 2-6) in Eastern Conference action.

Neshannock 49, Union 7

Ernie Burkes threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to lead the Lancers (7-2, 7-1) to a Big Seven Conference win against the Scotties (4-5, 4-4).

Sto-Rox 54, Rochester 7

Lenny Williams moved into fourth place in state history with 96 touchdown passes to lead the No.-1 ranked Vikings (9-0, 8-0) to a Big Seven Conference title with a victory against the Rams (2-7, 2-6). Williams threw for three scores, ran for one and recovered a fumble for another.

Monessen 42, Carlynton 13

Clintell Gillaspie, ranked second in scoring in the WPIAL, rushed for touchdowns of 1, 5 and 17 yards to lead the No. 4-ranked Greyhounds (9-1, 8-1) to a win against the Cougars (4-6, 3-6).

Frazier 54, Mapletown 27

The Commodores (7-2, 6-2) clinched third in the Tri-County South Conference with a victory against the Maples (5-4, 4-4). Charles Manack threw for 180 yards and four touchdowns. Nick Smalick rushed for two touchdowns and caught a 52-yard pass from Manack.

Apollo-Ridge 42, W. Shamokin 15

The Vikings (7-2, 6-2) won the battle for third in the Eastern Conference against the Wolves (6-3, 5-3) behind the arm of Jesse Zelonka, who threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns.

Laurel 28, Shenango 7

Josh Dando hurled three touchdown passes as the Spartans (7-2, 6-2) locked up the third spot in the Big Seven with a victory against the Wildcats (2-7, 1-7).

Avonworth 37, Northgate 0

Moses Giles bulled from 1 yard and rushed 43 yards for another score in the Antelopes' (8-1, 7-1) Eastern Conference win against the Flames (2-7, 2-6).

Avella 55, Bentworth 14

The Eagles (6-3, 5-3) clinched fourth in the Tri-County South Conference with a win against the Bearcats (1-8, 1-7). Nick Kusich rushed for three touchdowns for the Eagles.

Carmichaels 37, West Greene 0

Brandon Lawless hooked up twice with Tyler Aeschbacher to lead the Might Mikes (8-1, 7-1) to a Tri-County South win against the Pioneers (2-8, 2-6).

Brentwood 42, California 14

Kevin Kissel collected his 100th career win and the Spartans (6-4, 6-3) clinched fourth in the Black Hills with a win against the Trojans (4-5, 4-5).

W. Beaver 34, S. S. Beaver 26

The Golden Beavers (5-4, 5-3) survived a scare from the Rams (0-9, 0-8) in the Big Seven.

Beth-Center 46, Vincentian 0

The Bulldogs (9-0) complete a perfect regular season with non-conference victory against Vincentian (3-6).
