A talented junior football player in the WPIAL has been barred from playing, at least for now.

The WPIAL ruled Ricky Rogers ineligible to play football and basketball at Gateway High School this school year, saying he transferred from Keystone Oaks High School at least partly for athletic reasons. The WPIAL made the ruling after a hearing Thursday with Rogers, his family and school officials from Gateway and Keystone Oaks.

But Rogers is expected to appeal the ruling to the PIAA.

Rogers (6 feet 3, 190 pounds) was a starting receiver as a freshman and sophomore at Keystone Oaks.

He has a scholarship offer from Rutgers University, and other Division I colleges are interested. Rogers was home-schooled at Keystone Oaks and is enrolled at Gateway's cyber school.

The WPIAL also denied eligibility to two other athletes, ruling their transfers were at least partly for athletic intent. Jacob Thieret was ruled ineligible to play soccer at Serra after transferring from South Allegheny. David DeMarco was ruled ineligible at Central Valley after transferring from Riverside.

In other transfer news, Elijah Minnie, a 6-8 junior basketball player, has enrolled at Lincoln Park. Minnie was a starter at Monessen as a freshman, but, as a sophomore, was sent to Summit Academy, a school for adjudicated youth. Minnie, who lives in Monessen, still must be ruled eligible by the WPIAL and will likely have a hearing with the league.
