Class AAAA

Today's games: North Allegheny (22-1) vs. Hempfield (16-8), 8 p.m., Penn Hills; Penn-Trafford (18-6) vs. Fox Chapel (19-4), 6 p.m., Penn Hills.

Leading scorers: Monica Burns, Hempfield, 20.1; Maria Palarino, Penn-Trafford, 17.6; Erin Mathias, Fox Chapel, 16.7.

The scoop: North Allegheny is the No. 1 seed and facing a Hempfield team making its first semifinal appearance since 2001. Hempfield has scored 65 and 56 points in two playoff games; North Allegheny has allowed only one team to score 50 points in the past 12 contests. Hempfield has never made it to the title game while North Allegheny's last appearance was 1999. ... This is Penn-Trafford's first semifinal appearance in school history. Fox Chapel's Mathias is a 6-3 center who has signed with Duke, but the play of her supporting cast will be key to this game.

Class AAA

Wednesday's games: Blackhawk (21-2) vs. West Mifflin (18-5), 6 p.m., West Allegheny; Elizabeth Forward (20-3) vs. South Park (20-4), 6 p.m., Chartiers Valley.

Leading scorers: Chassidy Omogrosso, Blackhawk, 20.1; Allison McGrath, South Park, 17.3; Halie Torris, South Park, 15.9; Taylor Thomas, West Mifflin, 15.6.

The scoop: West Mifflin is somewhat of a surprise semifinalist. The Titans had to win a preliminary-round game to get to the round of 16. Thomas and Ciara Patterson are a nice one-two punch, and both have scored 1,000 career points. Omogrosso is a big scorer, but Blackhawk has other talented players. ... South Park beat Elizabeth Forward, 65-48, in the regular-season finale. McGrath is averaging 29 points in the playoffs.

Class AA

Today's games: Seton-LaSalle (20-4) vs. Bishop Canevin (19-5), 6 p.m., Chartiers Valley; Burrell (24-0) vs. Greensburg Central Catholic (19-4), 6 p.m., Baldwin

Leading scorers: Carolyn Appleby, Greensburg Central Catholic, 20.3; Sydney Bordonaro, Burrell, 15.9.

The scoop: Seton-LaSalle and Bishop Canevin come from same section and met in the past two WPIAL title games, with each team winning once. Seton-LaSalle has good balance and is led by three Pitt recruits -- guards Cassidy Walsh and Yacine Diop, and forward Naje Gibson. Johnie Olkosky is averaging 19 points in two playoff games for Bishop Canevin. ... Burrell never has made it to a WPIAL title game. Greensburg Central must control Bordonaro, who has averaged 21 points over the past six games.

Class A

Wednesday's games: Vincentian (20-3) vs. Quigley Catholic (18-5), 6 p.m., North Allegheny; Serra (22-2) vs. California (19-3), 6 p.m., Baldwin

Leading scorers: Brenna Wise, Vincentian, 18.2; Kylie Huffman, California, 15.6.

The scoop: Vincentian has been to the finals four times in the past seven years; Quigley is trying to make it to the title game for only the second time and first since 1989. Vincentian's defense could be the difference. The Royals have allowed more than 34 points only twice in the past 13 games. ... California is making its first semifinal appearance. The Trojans will face a Serra team that hasn't been challenged in weeks. Since a 53-44 loss Jan. 28 to Belle Vernon, no opponent has come within 28 points of Serra.
