Girls Playoff Roundup: California gets into semifinals

For the first time since 2007-2008, the Class A semifinals will be played without Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic as a participant.

On the other hand, California (19-3) will be entering uncharted territory in the semifinals after a 45-43 upset victory against the No. 3 Trojanettes.

North Catholic (16-8) held a five point lead, 41-36, with 1:10 remaining, but California finished on a 9-2 run.

After a Tristen Conaway 3-pointer, Dani Koehler tied the score, 41-41, with under a minute left. California took the lead for good on a basket by freshman Jenna Miller.

Fellow freshman, Kylie Huffman, sealed the victory from the free-throw line, going 3 for 4 in the final seconds.

Miller led California with a game-high 18 points.

Conaway chipped in with 14, and Huffman finished with nine.

The No. 6 Trojans, who are riding a 13-game winning streak, will face No. 2 Serra Catholic in the semifinals.

Other Class A

Serra Catholic 65, Aliquippa 15: An 18-4 first-quarter outburst propelled No. 2 Serra Catholic (22-2) to a victory against No. 10 Aliquippa (13-11) and into the semifinals for the second consecutive season. The Eagles' Megan Sieg led all scorers with 14 points.

Vincentian 60, Frazier 21: The No. 1 Royals (20-3) will return to the semifinals and get a chance to defend their WPIAL title after a quarterfinal victory against No. 9 Frazier (16-6). Brenna Wise led Vincentian with 15 points, 7 blocks and 6 rebounds. The Royals will face Quigley Catholic in the semifinals.

Quigley Catholic 49, St. Joseph 39: No. 5 Quigley Catholic (18-5) completed the semifinal bracket with their win against No. 4. St. Joseph (19-5). Liz Duer led the Spartans with 14 points.

Class AAA

Elizabeth Forward 72, Central Valley 47:The No. 2 Warriors (20-3) held the WPIAL's leading scorer Seairra Barrett to six points in a victory at West Allegheny. Abigail Sporio led the Warriors with 21 points and eight steals. Kiana Law had a game-high 28 points for No. 10 Central Valley (15-8).

South Park 67, Trinity 41: For the third time this season, No. 3 South Park (20-4) beat No. 11 Trinity (17-7) and, as a result, will continue their title defense in the semifinals against Elizabeth Forward. Allison McGrath had 30 points for the Eagles with 21 in the first half.

Blackhawk 69, Mount Pleasant 48: Chassidy Omogrosso finished with 29 points, including 15 in the third quarter, to lift No. 1 Blackhawk (21-2) into the semifinals with a win against No. 8 Mount Pleasant (15-9).

West Mifflin 44, Ringgold 33: After splitting the season series, the No. 12 Titans (18-5) took the rubber match against No. 13 Ringgold (13-10) and advanced to the semifinals. Taylor Thomas had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Titans.
