Central Catholic reluctantly heads north for basketball

The WPIAL has realigned its basketball sections, and the Central Catholic boys team is heading north -- even if the Vikings don't like it.

The WPIAL released new sections Tuesday for next season. One of the biggest changes was moving Central Catholic from Class AAAA Section 2 with eastern area teams into Section 3 with northern area teams. The WPIAL basketball committee came up with the new sections, and the league's Board of Control approved the realignment Tuesday.

Section 3 needed a team because Hampton and New Castle will drop to Class AAA. Many coaches, including Central Catholic's Chuck Crummie, thought Fox Chapel would be the logical choice to go to Section 3, but the WPIAL kept Fox Chapel in Section 2.

Central Catholic played in Section 3 from 2008-12, but has played most years in a section with eastern teams.

"It's a much easier deal for us with travel [in Section 2] and our crowds probably doubled the past two years from when we were in the north because we had our natural rivalries back," Crummie said.

"We'll play wherever, but this kind of makes you scratch their head."

WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said Fox Chapel wanted to stay in Section 2.

In another interesting move, New Castle and Beaver Falls will be in the same Class AAA boys section. Beaver Falls is electing to play "up" next season.

Football coaching changes

Ambridge is expected to name a new football coach tonight, and Sto-Rox coach Dan Bradley is the leading candidate. Bradley coached Sto-Rox to the WPIAL Class A title game the past three years. ... Latrobe named Mount Pleasant assistant Jason Marucco its new football coach. ... Art Tragesser resigned as Norwin's football coach.
