WPIAL basketball playoff pairings released



Only two defending WPIAL basketball champions are No. 1 seeds for this year’s playoffs.

The WPIAL announced playoff pairings and seedings at a meeting tonight in Green Tree and the two defending champs that are No. 1 seeds are New Castle in Class AAAA boys, and Vincentian in Class A girls.

The playoffs begin Friday and the eight championship games are Feb. 28 and March 1 at Duquesne University’s Palumbo Center.

Besides New Castle, the other No. 1 seeds for boys are Chartiers Valley (AAA), Seton-LaSalle (AA) and Lincoln Park (A).

Besides Vincentian, the other No. 1 seeds for girls are North Allegheny (AAAA), Blackhawk (AAA) and Seton-LaSalle (AA).

Here are the top eight seeds in each classification.

BOYS

Class AAAA – 1. New Castle. 2. Hampton. 3. North Allegheny. 4. Plum. 5. Upper St. Clair. 6. Hempfield. 7. Franklin Regional. 8. Fox Chapel. A good first-round game is Bethel Park vs. Fox Chapel.

Class AAA – 1. Chartiers Valley. 2. Central Valley. 3. Thomas Jefferson. 4. Elizabeth Forward. 5. Uniontown. 6. Knoch. 7. Indiana. 8. Mars.

Class AA – 1. Seton-LaSalle. 2. Greensburg Central Catholic. 3. Aliquippa. 4. Beaver Falls. 5. Neshannock. 6. Avonworth. 7. Quaker Valley. 8. Summit Academy.

Class A – 1. Lincoln Park. 2. Vincentian. 3. Monessen. 4. North Catholic. 5. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. 6. Wilkinsburg. 7. Sewickley Academy. 8. Carmichaels.

GIRLS
