High school highlights: Rare quadruple-double for Chartiers Valley's McConnell

Chartiers Valley's Matty McConnell needed 39 points Tuesday night to reach 1,000 for his career.

He not only surpassed the mark, but also recorded a quadruple-double in the process.

McConnell, a junior, had 46 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals to lift the Class AAA No. 1 Colts (19-1, 11-0) to a 110-86 victory against visiting South Park (7-14, 5-7) in Section 5.

McConnell made 11 3-pointers, seven coming in the second quarter when the Colts outscored South Park, 42-17.

McConnell's effort gave him 1,007 points for his career.

Dan Wanker had 35 points and 17 rebounds for the Eagles.

Other games

■ After leading by two points at halftime, Class AAAA No. 1 New Castle (20-0, 13-0) pulled away for a 64-48 road win against No. 3 North Allegheny (17-2, 11-2) in Section 3. Malik Hooker led the Red Hurricanes with 18 points.

■ Ryan Luther had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Class AAAA No. 2 Hampton (19-2, 11-2) past visiting Seneca Valley (11-10, 6-7), 75-65, in Section 3.

■ Class AAAA No. 5 Hempfield (18-2, 11-0) clinched Section 1 with a 51-37 win at Kiski Area (14-5, 10-2). Kason Harrell led the Spartans attack with 19 points.

■ Eric Rairman scored the winning basket with three seconds left to lift Class AAA No. 4 Thomas Jefferson (18-2, 10-1) past host No. 5 Steel Valley (13-4, 7-4), 73-72, in Section 4.

■ Ernie Burkes poured in 18 points to help Neshannock (16-5, 9-4) get the season sweep of Class AA Beaver Falls (16-5, 11-2) with a 58-55 road win in Section 2.

■ Led by 18 points from Jay Cortese, Class A No. 2 Vincentian (19-1, 9-0) clinched the Section 2 title with a 71-63 road win against No. 5 Sewickley Academy (12-6, 7-2).

Milestones

■ Mike Miara of West Allegheny scored 29 points to give him 1,002 for his career in a 75-43 victory for the host Indians (12-9) against Southmoreland (2-17) in non-section action. Miara hit six 3-pointers in the game, giving him a school-record 145 for his career.

■ Uniontown's Jordan Pratt has 1,006 career points after his 12-point night in an 84-37 win for the Class AAA No. 3 Red Raiders (18-1, 11-0) against visiting Mount Pleasant (12-6, 9-2) in Section 2.

Star of the night

■ Maverick Rowan scored 19 of his 39 points in the second quarter in a 85-49 win for the Class A No. 1 Leopards (19-1, 9-0) against visiting Union (8-12, 4-5) in Section 1.

■ Players with seven or more 3-pointers: Matty McConnell, Chartiers Valley, 11; Matt Indorante, Charleroi, 10, Hunter Shelton, Kiski School, 9; Timon Gribbon, North Catholic, 7.

Top girls game

■ Krista Pietropola scored 15 points to help visiting Plum (13-7, 8-3) hand Class AAAA No. 4 Fox Chapel (16-4, 11-1) its first Section 2 loss.
