High school highlights: Stingy Plum tops Central Catholic

Defense has been a key to Plum's success this season, and the Mustangs locked down Central Catholic Tuesday night in another section win.
The host Mustangs (15-2, 9-2) became the first team to hold the Vikings (10-8, 7-4) to fewer than 50 points this season in a 52-45 victory in Class AAAA Section 2.
Plum has allowed the second-fewest points per game (43.6) in the WPIAL, and held the Vikings to just 28 points in the first three quarters Tuesday to take an 11-point lead into the fourth.
Central Catholic made a run in the final quarter, but Plum made 6 of 6 free throws, four coming from Nick Stotler, in the final 1:30 to seal the win.
Austin Dedert led Plum with 23 points and 15 rebounds, and Stotler chipped in with 15 points.
Alex Schoppen had a team-high 16 points for Central Catholic.

■ Franklin Regional had four players in double figures, led by Charan Singh's 15 points, in a 62-53 victory for the host Panthers (12-6, 7-4) against Class AAAA No. 5 Gateway (12-7, 8-3) in Section 2. Delvon Randall led the Gators with 14 points.
■ Matty McConnell had 32 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals to lead Class AAA No. 1 Chartiers Valley (17-1, 10-0) to a 65-55 victory against host Montour (10-6, 6-2) in Section 5. Dustin Sleva poured in a team-high 22 points for the Spartans.
■ Julian Batts scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to help lift Jeannette (11-7, 7-3) to a 59-39 win against visiting Serra Catholic (7-11, 3-6) in Class AA Section 3.
■ Ryan Maha of West Mifflin scored 26 points to surpass 1,000 for his career in a 77-71 win for the Titans (9-5, 5-4) against host Belle Vernon (8-8, 3-6) in Class AAA Section 4. Maha, a senior, has 1,018 career points.
Top girls game
■ Belle Vernon's Kaitlyn Slagus scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the visiting the Leopards (14-4) to a 53-44 non-section win against Class A No. 2 Serra Catholic (16-2). The loss snapped a 15-game win streak for Serra Catholic.
