Beaver Falls beats Holy Cross, 69-63, for PIAA title



HERSHEY, Pa. -- The Beaver Falls Tigers sported "2013 WPIAL champions" T-shirts before their game Saturday.

When the game concluded, new T-shirts were already being printed.

They read "2013 PIAA champions."

Beaver Falls overcame a double-digit third-quarter deficit to District 2 champion Holy Cross, 69-63, in the PIAA Class AA boys championship at the Giant Center.

It's the fourth PIAA title for Beaver Falls and first since 2005.

Beaver Falls (28-3) fell behind Holy Cross, 48-38, with 1:57 left in the third quarter, but the Tigers responded with a 19-6 run to take a 57-54 lead after Dan Stratton made a 3-pointer with 3:23 remaining in the fourth. The Tigers never trailed again and outscored Holy Cross, 28-15, in the fourth quarter.

Drew Cook scored 15 points to lead a group of four Beaver Falls players scoring in double figures. Stratton and Micoy Mason each had 14 points, and Elijah Cottrill added 12.

Josh Kosin, a 6-foot-6 center, led Holy Cross (27-6) with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.
