PIAA Boys Roundup: New Castle cruises past Gateway again

The WPIAL playoffs ended for Gateway two weeks ago with a blowout loss to New Castle.

Gateway's plight in the PIAA playoffs ended the same way.

Undefeated New Castle jumped to a 25-point halftime lead and cruised past Gateway, 69-48, in a PIAA Class AAAA first-round game Saturday at North Allegheny.

Senior forward Shawn Anderson led New Castle (27-0) with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Junior guard-forward Malik Hooker added 15 and junior guard Anthony Richards had 12, all on 3-pointers. Richards has 19 baskets in five postseason games, all 3-pointers.

Delvon Randall was the only Gateway player in double-figure scoring with 20.

Class AAAA

• Erie Cathedral Prep 79, Seneca Valley 54: Seneca Valley (17-9) couldn't measure up to Cathedral Prep (22-2) in this first-round contest at General McLane. Cathedral Prep, the District 10 champion, made 8 of 10 3-pointers in the first two quarters to grab a 31-20 halftime lead. The Ramblers poured it on in the second half.

• North Allegheny 84, State College 76: After falling behind, 23-5, in the first quarter, North Allegheny (22-4) came on strong to post a victory against State College (17-8) at Altoona. North Allegheny scored 52 points in the second and third quarters and took a 66-55 lead into the final quarter. Sean Hennigan led North Allegheny with 22 points while Adam Haus added 15 and his brother, David, 10. Ryan Sekunda had 27 points for State College.

Class AA

• Greensburg Central Catholic 66, Penn Cambria 56: Brian Graytok and Zach Herman each scored 21 points to lift Greensburg Central Catholic (23-2) to a victory at Altoona. Graytok scored 18 points in the first half to help the Centurions grab a 16-point lead. A.J. Leahey had 22 points for Penn Cambria (20-5).

• Bishop McCort 62, Burrell 43: Bishop McCort (19-8) kept finding Nemo Trexler open, and he responded with 24 points to lead Bishop McCort past Burrell (19-8) at Gateway. Burrell, a WPIAL finalist, was trying to win a PIAA game for the first time in school history. Matt Hess had 14 points for Burrell.

• Beaver Falls 92, Bald Eagle Area 48: Drew Cook had 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and eight assists as the WPIAL champion Tigers (24-3) blew out Bald Eagle (21-5) at North Allegheny. Elijah Cottrill added 18 points and eight rebounds while Zach Miller had four 3-pointers and 16 points. Beaver Falls made 13 3-pointers. In Beaver Falls' five postseason contests (WPIAL and PIAA), no team has come within 28 points of the Tigers.

• Lakeview 44, Quaker Valley 40: Quaker Valley (20-6) scored only 14 points in the second half and lost to Lakeview (22-4) at Slippery Rock University. Quaker Valley led at halftime, 26-23, but scored only seven points each in the third and fourth quarters. Burke Moser led Quaker Valley with 14 points.

• North Cambria 58, Apollo-Ridge 53: Apollo-Ridge (18-9) saw its season end with a loss to North Cambria (23-4) at Central Cambria.
