Westinghouse beats Perry for City League boys' basketball championship

The Westinghouse High School boys basketball team hoisted the City League championship trophy this afternoon -- an act the Bulldogs haven't performed for 15 years.

Westinghouse won the City League title with a 61-52 victory against Perry at Obama Academy in East Liberty. It was Westinghouse's first City League basketball title since 1998.

Shaquan Johnson scored 20 points to lead Westinghouse and Aaron Lyons had 15. Robert Bailey, the team's leading scorer on the season, was held to 10.

The Westinghouse boys basketball team won its first City League championship since 1998 by beating Perry Saturday at Obama Academy (Video by Brian Batko; 2/23/2013).

The game was tied, 27-27, at halftime, but Westinghouse went on a 17-5 run to grab a 44-32 advantage late in the third quarter. Westinghouse built the lead to 55-40 with 4:55 remaining before Perry came back and sliced the deficit to 59-51 with 1:10 remaining.

But the Commdores could get no closer.

Shakeem Cox scored 19 points for Perry.
