In a must-win game, the Penn-Trafford Warriors turned to their ace pitcher to propel them into the WPIAL baseball playoffs.

Tyler Smith tossed a complete game and struck out 12 in leading host Penn-Trafford to a 6-0 win against Latrobe in Class AAAA Section 2.

In what was essentially a playoff game, Penn-Trafford (15-4, 8-4) edged Latrobe (9-9, 7-5) for the third and final playoff spot in the section.

Smith, a senior right-hander and Canisius recruit, allowed four hits and no walks. Smith struck out the side in the first inning and rolled from there.

"From the first inning, we knew he was on. And when he's on, he's on" coach Ron Evans said.

Mark Merlino went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Warriors, whose two first-inning runs turned out to be all the offense they needed.
