High school highlights: Neshannock stays perfect, nabs section title

The only undefeated baseball team in WPIAL Class AA got pushed to the brink.

The result was an outright section title.

Neshannock scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning Friday to edge host Riverside, 9-8, in Section 5.

Mark Clause led Neshannock (16-0, 12-0) with four hits and two RBIs.

Ross Maietta and Jason Pettner homered for Riverside (9-4, 8-3), which was a section co-champion the previous two seasons.

Other top baseball games

■ Nick LaCava went 2 for 4 with two RBIs in leading Central Catholic (8-4, 4-3) to an 8-6 win at Class AAAA No. 2 Baldwin (9-2, 6-2) in Section 3.

■ Tyler Volz drove in three runs and Chad Meyer homered for North Hills (7-7, 4-5) in an 8-6 win at Class AAAA No. 4 North Allegheny (11-6, 7-2) in Section 1. North Allegheny had beaten North Hills seven times in a row.

■ Taylor Lehman pitched an eight-inning no-hitter and struck out 15 to propel Keystone Oaks (7-6, 5-3) to a 1-0 win against visiting Waynesburg (6-8, 4-5) in Class AAA Section 3. Nick Riggle singled in the winning run.

■ Charlie Placek tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to help Class AAA No. 1 Montour (11-3, 8-1) edge visiting West Allegheny (10-4, 4-4), 1-0, in Section 1. Frank Guerra drove in the winning run.

■ Jared Conti's bases-loaded walk scored Jarred Hozak and vaulted Class AA No. 3 South Side Beaver (14-1, 11-1) to its eighth win in a row, 3-2, against visiting Avonworth (5-9, 3-8) in Section 1.

■ Josh Luko fired a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts to keep Class A No. 1 California (15-0, 9-0) undefeated after a 3-0 win at Jefferson-Morgan (3-10, 3-6) in Section 1.

■ Christian Fedko went 4 for 4 and Class A No. 3 Vincentian (13-0, 7-0) clinched the outright Section 5 title with a 4-2 win at Sewickley Academy (6-5, 4-3).

Softball

■ Haley Reid's second home run of the game -- a two-run blast in the ninth -- gave Bethel Park (8-4, 8-4) an 11-9 win at Class AAAA No. 1 Canon-McMillan (14-3, 10-2) in Section 4.

■ Brianna Dobson threw a one-hitter and hit a two-run home run in the fifth to help Class AAAA No. 2 Shaler (10-2, 8-2) slip past visiting Fox Chapel (0-13, 0-11), 2-0, in Section 3.

■ Alyssa Cairns' three-run double in the sixth helped Class AAA No. 4 West Mifflin (14-2, 9-2) rally to win at Yough (6-6, 5-6), 4-3, in Section 3. Yough's Macy Mularski no-hit West Mifflin through five innings.

■ Lacey Weible had two RBIs to lead South Side Beaver (9-2, 8-2) to its fifth win in a row, 4-2, at Class A No. 2 Shenango (10-3, 8-2) in Section 4.
