High School Highlights: Penn-Trafford crushes No. 1 Hempfield

Tyler Smith and Penn-Trafford made short work of Class AAAA's No. 1 team Thursday.

Smith went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and five RBIs to lead the No. 3 Warriors (8-0, 4-0) to a 13-2 home victory in five innings over top-ranked Hempfield (6-1, 3-1) in Section 2.

Smith also got the win on the mound, giving up two hits while striking out 10 without surrendring a walk.

It is was the third time this week Penn-Trafford scored at least 12 runs in a game.

Other top baseball games

• North Allegheny (5-2, 3-1) scored five runs in the 12th inning to notch a Class AAAA Section 1 win, 6-1, against host Seneca Valley (2-5, 1-2) in a rematch of last season's WPIAL championship game. Jon Dignazio pitched five shutout innings for the Tigers.

• Class AAA No. 5 Laurel Highlands (6-3, 4-0) scored four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to rally for a 14-11 victory against Greensburg Salem (2-4, 2-1) in Section 2. Corey Dascenzo had the go-ahead two-run single, and Troy Kifer added the insurance runs with a two-run double.

• Brandon Donovan went 4 for 5 with four RBIs to lead Class AA No. 2 Steel Valley to a 12-4 home win against No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic (3-3, 1-1) in Section 4.

• Kevin Curran had a two-run single and finished 2 for 3 to help host Seton-LaSalle (5-2, 3-1) hand Quaker Valley (3-2, 2-2) its second consecutive loss, 4-1, in Class AA Section 1.

• Charlie Placek and Trent Veitmeier combined on a one-hitter and struck out 14 to help Montour (5-2, 2-0) beat host Hopewell (2-4, 0-2), 2-0, in eight innings in Class AAA Section 1. Placek threw the first seven innings, surrendering one hit and striking out 11.

Walk-off winners

• Robbie Constantino doubled home Matt Freilino in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Mt. Lebanon (4-7, 1-2) a 6-5 victory against Bethel Park (3-4, 1-2) in Class AAAA Section 5.

• Ethan Pagley hit a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift New Castle (4-4, 1-2) past North Hills (4-3, 1-1), 12-11 in Class AAAA Section 1.

Top performers

• Cameron Smith threw a complete-game no-hitter, walking two and striking out seven in a 7-0 win for host Mars (4-4, 1-1) against Kittanning (1-4, 0-2).

• Andrew Emes held Avonworth (2-4, 1-3) without a hit in a 17-0, five-inning road win for New Brighton (4-3, 3-1) in Class AA Section 1. Emes struck out six and walked four.

• J.J. Matijevic went 3 for 3 with six RBIs to lead Norwin (5-1, 2-1) to a 17-5 victory against Albert Gallatin (2-5, 0-3) in Class AAAA Section 2.

• Clairton's Harrison Dreher went 4 for 4 with four runs scored and four stolen bases to help the visiting Bears (1-2, 1-1) beat Geibel Catholic (0-5, 0-2), 9-6. Dreher also pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win on the mound.

• Scott Ventura had three doubles and knocked in three runs to help Deer Lakes (5-2, 3-0) beat visiting Ford City (0-4, 0-2), 11-3, in Class AA Section 3.

Top softball games

• Ashley Yanniruberto hit a grand slam as host Penn-Trafford (6-2, 4-2) crushed Class AAAA No. 2 Norwin (5-1, 4-1), 12-2, in six innings in Section 1.

• Meredith Carr threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out five, to lift Latrobe (6-1, 4-1) to a 1-0 victory against visiting Hempfield (3-2, 3-2) in Class AAAA Section 1.

• Molly Welsh had a home run and a triple to help host Bethel Park (4-2, 4-2) down Class AAAA No. 5 Baldwin (5-2, 4-2), 12-5, in Section 4.

• Winning pitcher Nikki Matz struck out four to help Class AAAA No. 1 Seneca Valley (5-0, 5-0) shut out Butler (2-4, 2-4), 5-0 in Section 3. Jess Neill had two hits for the Raiders.

• Melissa Wagner struck out 15 in a one-hitter to lift Class AAA No. 2 Greensburg Salem (5-0, 5-0) to an 8-1 victory against visiting Derry (0-4, 0-4) in Section 4.

• West Allegheny (4-2, 4-2) scored all its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat No. 4 South Fayette (5-1, 4-1), 4-3. Indians pitcher Marla Kirkpatrick earned the win.

• Kelly Haslett struck out five in earning the win for visiting Ambridge (3-0, 3-0), as they beat Class AAA No. 3 Blackhawk (3-1, 2-1), 9-3, in Section 1.

• Madison Ludrosky struck out 13 to help No. 4 Jefferson-Morgan (7-1, 6-1) beat host West Greene (5-5, 4-2), 8-5, in Section 2. Jessica Taylor had three hits for the Rockets.
