The WPIAL postponed two baseball championship games Tuesday because of thunderstorms.

The Class AA title game between Riverside and Ellwood City will be played at 3 p.m. today at Consol Energy Park in North Franklin Township, Washington County, and will be the first of a tripleheader. The Class AAA final between Blackhawk and Belle Vernon has been moved to 7 p.m. Thursday at Consol.

The Class A and AAAA title games will be played as scheduled today at Consol. Neshannock plays California at 5:30 p.m., and Mt. Lebanon meets Seneca Valley at 8 p.m.

Three softball consolation games also were postponed until today. The sites remain the same but the Class AAA game will start at 4 p.m. instead of 6. The Class A game was moved to 6 p.m. and the Class AA game remained at 2 p.m. There is no consolation game in Class AAAA.

The four softball championships are Thursday.

Throw for the ages

South Park's Bill Stanley set a national high school record for the javelin Saturday when he threw 246 feet, 9 inches at the PIAA championships. To put that throw into perspective, look at the NCAA Division I championships from a year ago. Stanley's throw would have placed him in third. The winning throw was 263-6.

Baseball awards

The WPIAL Baseball Coaches Association announced its 2012 award winners. The players of the year were Norwin's J.J. Matijevic (Class AAAA), Valley's Zarley Zalewski (AAA), Shady Side Academy's Ben Hartz (AA) and Neshannock's John Sansone (A).

Pitchers of the year for each classification were Plum's Anthony Garofalo, Thomas Jefferson's Greg Schneider, Ellwood City's Anthony Carusone and California's T.D. Conway.

Coaches of the year were Norwin's Mike Liedbzinski, South Park's Steve Bucci, Brownsville's Skooter Roebuck and California's Don Hartman.

Award winners will be honored at a June 8 banquet that kicks off the Coaches Association's all-star weekend. The weekend is capped by two WPIAL all-star games beginning at 1 p.m. June 10 at Burkett Field, Robinson.

Coaching news

Bishop Canevin hired Tony DiMaria as its new boys basketball coach. It will be DiMaria's second stint at the school. He also coached the Crusaders in the early 1990s.
